Pahari Miniature & SH Raza

               Pahari paintings developed from 17^th to 19^th centuries in the present state of Himachal Pradesh. These paintings were influenced by painters of Mughal. Pahari miniatures are known for their soft touch, calmness, impulse, characteristic symbolism, excellent sense of composition, and minute details and a deep feeling for human emotion. Pahari paintings contain the indigenous style in spite of the Mughal influence. Also, they have Indian mythological and religious stories. The paintings were done on handmade paper, which is made of bamboo, cotton and other materials. This painting had two principal phases of development. The earlier phase started from the mid- 17^th century. It was extraordinarily colorful with primitive expressions charged with energy and emotional intensity.  These phases could be distinguished by fish which was shaped elongated eyes, oval faces, receding foreheads, round chins and prominent noses. Backgrounds of the paintings were usually red, yellow, green or brown colors. The later phase was developed from the 18^th century in the Guler area. This phase was more naturalistic with lines that seemed to be flowing in a rhythmic way. The color scheme also became slightly cooler and freshness. Pahari miniature started to decline in the 19^th century.

         Syed Haider Raza is born on 22^nd February 1922 in Madhya Pradesh. He lived and worked in France since 1950. His works are mainly abstracts in oil or acrylic, with a very rich use of color, full with icons from Indian cosmology as well as its philosophy. He had his first exhibition in1946 at Bombay Art Society Salon and was awarded the Silver Medal of the society. He started out his career as a semi-abstract landscape artist. But towards the beginning of the 70s his style evolved into creating geometrical designs. He used colors that are primarily Indian and are quite vivid and brilliant in nature. S.H.Raza’s painting titled ‘Saurashtra’ became the most expensive Indian painting ever auctioned. Christie’s auctioned the painting for $3.5 million. It is painted in acrylic on canvas and is a composition in bright colors and cubic shapes that emanate from the artist's trademark 'bindu' or the dot to transform into bigger and complex shapes. He believed it symbolized energy and painted series of painting in this theme. He is one of the founders of the Progressive Art Movement in India and has made Paris his home since the 1950s. He is currently 88 years old and lives in Paris and Gorbio.

My concentration focuses on the pattern. This includes same objects repeating and mixed up. I started with pieces that's more realistic; objects that people can easily tell what it is. But starting in the middle I started to make more abstract such as one object's parts mixed up, so people have to find out what is the object.

PART 2

1. Explain what it is you like about these 5 artworks (elements/common threads)

I like the usage of shapes in these 5 artworks. All the artists somehow put shapes in there drawing that repeated and created images. Also, the repetition of similar/ same images and created a pattern in their works.

2. What is it that these elements are expressing?

These elements are expressing because the repetition of each certain image catches the people's eyes. The pattern images attract the viewers' eyes. It has somehow mysterious attraction to the artworks.

3. How could you take some of these strategies and apply them to your own work -- either in terms of media, formal qualities, and/or theme?

My artworks already took some of their strategies. I would like to apply the oil work on canvas as well as the illusion feeling in their artworks. Also, the neatness of the artwork, how each artworks are accurately clear at the every edge of the works.

PART 3

1. Choose one artist and research what has influenced his or her work. If the artist is alive and has a website you should look at what they've written about their work. If the artist is not contemporary, then research what others have written about this artist.

I chose Patrick Caulfield. His painting are figurative, portray of a few simple objects in an interior. He used flat areas of simple color surrounded by black outlines. I really like the art I put of his because it gives somewhat illusion feeling when you look at the work. It doesn't have many colors to attract the viewers but the combination of black and white, lines and flowers itself attracted me.

SuWan: concentration

My concentration is pattern.

I found that repetition of same image can make different image as a whole.

Also, even though I used the same object to repeat, I made some differences between and that created a better pattern.

I chose phone and camera for this first two art works. Both of the objects really mean something to me; camera, I like taking pictures, phone, the only thing that I can actually talk with my parents and friends.

My concentration is pattern, more specifically patterns of the objects that are special/ meaningful to me.

These are art works of a painter Andy Warhol. Even some of his art works are very patterned. He used same colors and different colors in each pattern.

I'm going to use different values of shading, and use of colors in my works. Also, some photographs using the photoshop.

Concentration: Shapes (Design)

I chose shapes for my portfolio concentration. I would like to creat designs using different shapes. Also I believe that shapes/ designs can express many different things not just simply picture but emotions. I would like to create designs that shows different perspectives.

This is the official website of Keith Haring. This website has his art work from 1978 to 1990.
He was a pop artist, street artists and graffiti artist.
He used bold lines, vivid colors in his drawing.
He also made some collages and sculptures.
He drew active figures which carry messages of life and unity.
I like how his drawings, painting are characters, not a real human figure. Also the way he used the colors, not mixing; the bold lines between each colors.
