Zarka - Geometry

This the first piece for my concentration. It is not a maze. It actually repeats one word over and over again, the word being "Mashallah". "Mashallah" is an Urdu word which is meant to protect one from the evil eye, thus the images of the eye. The maze shape is actually a form of Urdu calligraphy.

My concentration for this portfolio will be geometry and the medium/theme I'm using is Urdu and Arabic calligraphy. As a kid, I always felt like the greatest achievable honour for me was having a beautiful Urdu handwriting and after 3 years of training with a professional calligraphist I found that what makes Urdu writing visually appealing is symmetry. This is why I chose geometry as my concentration. However, I find that there is symmetry in almost everything around us though it is not entirely obvious. My work won't seem "geomtrical" sometimes, but that will be a part of the mystery I'm trying to create. Because geometry, a lot like beauty, confuses me.

I find music very fascinating as it is an art form in itself. Music captures all emotions, in a way that no actions, or words can. It is an easy way to express emotions as well. So, I chose melody as my concentration to try and capture the peace and calm one feels when he/ she is engrossed in music.

I chose music as my theme because i love the way how music brings everyone together and united. I also personally like music because it makes me happy and bring relaxation to my stress and problems. It is just beautiful how people can also be convinced and persuaded through music too.I plan to connect boredom with my musical art and modify it.

The unique properties of glass can express rather different perspectives. Glass is at one angle transparent allowing human eyes to see through it, but at another angle it can reflect the light or shape of any other objects. Sometimes it is even capable of distorting images, for example a person's face looking into the glass observed from the opposite side. These properties of transparency, reflection and distortions not only could be used to create visually unique and interesting paintings, but also can be mixed with different ideas and objects in order to show different angles or hidden perspectives of the subjects and thus recreate them.

Akriti: Mental issues

Mental issues are something that have always interested me. This is mainly because of their dealings with the human mind; something that has always mystified as well as intrigued me. The problems that people face and the ordeals they have to overcome usually add to their mental well-being and I would like to depict all of these struggles in my concentration. Mental issues and psychological dilemmas are something that can be interpreted by an individual's perspective and I would like to depict my take on these phenomena. My interest mainly lies in psychology as well as other matters of the mind, and so I chose this as my concentration.

I have always been interested in faces. I think they hold a lot of emotions and artwork in themselves. People come in all shapes and sizes and I love to depict and capture that in my photography. Black and White pictures really help accentuate the idea of faces, as the simplicity of the photo color helps the subject, in this case, the face, get all the attention. I want to capture as many different black and white faces as I can in photography. After all, no two people are alike...
