Rignor: Woodstock II

  1. Looking at the two paintings, I like how the first is more surreal and playful while the second is more on a serious note. The colors used help in setting the mood of the paintings. In the first piece, the overall palate is of cool colors which makes it soothing for the viewers. While in the second painting, the use of primary colors gives a bold yet peaceful feeling. The tree seems to be the main object in both the paintings.Universally, things placed in the middle are usually of the highest importance. However, it also depends on the details of the object so i think the trees don't necessarily have to be placed right in the middle, especially the first piece. I think the first piece would have been more interesting if the tree were to be placed elsewhere. For instance, on the corners, or sides of the page with the guitars and musical notes extending out from the side to make it have a flowing effect. Even if it is not placed in the center, it'll still be noticed because it has a lot going on and is eye catching. I like how you used the blues for the background because it doesn't cause too much distractions from the tree. I also like how the clouds have different shades of grays as it adds to a "puff" look. In the second painting, I like how you took the idea of the Tibetan flag and customized it to make it into something personal of yours. Though it does not use complicated shapes or shading, the simplicity of it makes it very powerful to the eye. I like that the shapes and lines are all balanced and proportioned and somewhat creates depth and perspective. Since the whole painting itself is not chaotic and pretty simple, i think you could have improved it by doing something with the middle or the yellow part. The yellow would have been more pleasurable to look at if some light patterns or texture was applied, or maybe even a bit of gold glitter. To add on, if you were to be adventurous and take a little risk, you could have tried increasing the number of faces and clump them together in a corner, but then again, the placing now itself looks fine. Both paintings are very creative and well thought out. Good job.
