1. Explain what it is you like about these 5 artworks (elements/common threads).
From my perspective, these five paintings were particularly prominent because of the balanced mixture of sketching and painting techniques, details and use of contrast.

3. Choose one artist and research what has influenced his or her work. If the artist is alive and has a website you should look at what they've written about their work. If the artist is not contemporary, then research what others have written about this artist.
Mark Joshua Epstein’s recent art pieces are influenced by the 1940s and 50s future interior design guides which were imagined. This piece called Continental Divide #4 is also one of them and he balances the mood of Eastern and Western buildings along different patterns. The people in the 1940s and 50s thought the better designs of rooms were the better they will become by living in it. And the artist successfully achieve this idea in the painting by giving merged identity to unite two different themes combining positive aspects opposing type of ideas therefore creating something somewhat better. Also the extraordinary pattern in the background and the twisted surface supported by the pillars of desks and drawers provide additional futuristic and abstract mood to the piece.

1. Explain what it is you like about these 5 artworks (elements/common threads).
From my perspective, these five paintings were particularly prominent because of the balanced mixture of sketching and painting techniques, details and use of contrast.
All of these paintings do have fully painted layer at the top yet the sketched graphite and ink layers are very distinguished as well, showing the aspects of different dimensions. However, the contrast of different colors and numerous small details forming bigger picture succeed to blend them in harmony, creating interesting pieces of art works.
2. What is it that these elements are expressing?
These elements in fact express number of interesting ideas. First of all, the distinguished boundaries between two different dimensions express the idea that there are always different perspectives and angles towards every object. As the harmony between the two make the painting look better, it shows the significance of accepting all of them. Also the small details building up to form bigger indicate the significance of insignificant and trivial factors in the whole. Having sketch layer displayed may seem to make the images more fixed, physical and bound to the realism but the twists in them suggests otherwise to show ironies and different possibilities which always exist and take over.
3. How could you take some of these strategies and apply them to your own work -- either in terms of media, formal qualities, and/or theme?

From the beginning, I personally liked distinguishing the two different dimensions in the art work. Besides, the reflection and distortions which I attempt to apply in my art works serve similar purposes, to be realistic but to indicate something more from the inside and different angles. However, I feel the need to figure out the technique of focusing on small details to improve the bigger picture, and also more clear contrast in the art piece which bind the different dimensions together because doing so will create so much more high quality and interesting concentrated pieces of art.
