What Happened To Prostitution?

  1. The first piece sets its mood and setting really well as its background gels with the title smoothly. The dark colors along with the brown used, shows the dark side of a modern city. The way you placed the dark colors at the bottom of the cigarette, and the lighter colors at the top of the cigarette is brilliant. I think the different light setting used according to the cigarette's positioning can be viewed in two different ways.

One point of view could be that as one smokes on, they start giving in to the joys of the cigarette and tobacco. The brighter lights at the upper part of the work shows that. At the same time, this could show how industrialization has been progressive for humans, yet harmful towards nature, and surprisingly towards humans too as the cigarette tells us. The way the cigarette and some of the buildings bend adds to this interpreted theme of industrialization (modern city) killing humans too, as we start losing sight of whats good or bad for ourselves. One suggestion for this piece would be to show the signs on the buildings in a clearer manner. The shading in certain areas could have used a bit more attention. The neon lights reflecting its colorful light off the smoke would have been a nice addition.

The second piece touches upon humor at first because of the title. It's background color of white in the center surrounded by yellow seems to give it a very common look. This background color could be an indication of how Geishas' services were only available to the upper class, but is now available to anyone, with a different term in mind (prostitution.) The positioning of the Geisha and the netted legs seems to juxtapose the whole idea of a Geisha being available only to the high class back then, and the fact that prostitutes are available to anyone these days.
The sign that says "live nudes" could be clearer. Personally, the addition of the blue neon light reflecting off other objects would be a nice touch to the piece.

Despite the lack of attention on shading and making certain signs clear, these two pieces stick to its strong ideas well, and present them nicely.
